Stammering (also called stuttering) is a speech disorder where a person repeats or prolongs sounds, syllables, or words, or has difficulty starting words. It may also include physical tension or struggle when speaking. It's common among children and can persist into adulthood if not addressed.
Stammering is a speech and communication disorder. While it is not caused by low intelligence or emotional problems, it can be worsened by stress or anxiety. In most cases, it has neurological and genetic factors. It is not caused by witchcraft or curses, a common myth in some Tanzanian communities.
Yes. Stammering can be managed with the help of a trained speech and language therapist. Several hospitals and private clinics in Tanzania, especially in urban areas like Dar es Salaam and Arusha, offer speech therapy services. Early intervention in childhood improves results significantly.
Yes, stammering affects both children and adults in Tanzania, just like in other countries. While exact numbers vary, it’s estimated that around 1 in 100 adults may stammer, and the number is slightly higher in children. Unfortunately, due to stigma, many do not seek help.
Stay calm and supportive. Avoid interrupting, correcting, or rushing the child while they speak. It's important to seek help from a speech therapist as early as possible. Early support can help reduce the impact of stammering on your child's confidence and communication.
You can seek support at:
Muhimbili National Hospital (Speech Therapy Department)
KCMC Hospital in Moshi
Private speech therapy clinics in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza You can also contact organizations working in child development or rehabilitation. A referral from your local clinic or pediatrician may help.
